PROJECTS

Independent Living House’s mission is to meet needs that have been unmet by Detroit Public Schools, Detroit Wayne County Mental Health Authority, and the community at large: to provide independent living programs for youth and young adults with learning disabilities who are socially and economically disadvantaged.

Project 1

Independent Living Housing is changing the way metro Detroit views the learning disabled population and how the students view the world. We have created a program for students ages 3 to 26 with learning disabilities that runs during and after school. The classrooms offer courses in English, math, science, sewing, social science, writing, conflict resolution, arts, leadership development and urban gardening. Our goal is to address poverty inside and outside. This project also provides a residence for these individuals and their families as well as group therapy and two daily meals.
